Ricky Gervais is "Extra Special"

Ricky Gervais - IMDb.comRicky Gervais is a clown, and I say this in the ancient sense of Comedy/Tragedy.  His blend encompasses fun, shame, sorrow, and all the aspects of human emotion in between.

His seminal show, "The Office" is quite a different animal to the version we see on this side of the Atlantic. We like a little pathos and some snarkiness, but have a hard time laughing at characters that are pathetic and/or reprehensible. The Steve Carell version is mostly very amusing, but I must admit to having adjustment issues. But one should not expect an import to travel verbatim and if it did, why bother watching?

Funnier than The Office (British version) is Extras. Here is the ongoing travails of an ambitious bit-player who aspires to actually say something on camera. Once that happens, his dreams and hopes know no bounds, leading him to terrible choices.

His sidekicks are played by Stephen Merchant {also his writing and directing partner] and Ashley Jensen. They are clueless and unbearably sad, respectively.  Unlike other comedies where guest stars are brought in as stunts during sweeps week, the guests on Extras are an integral part of the story because of the show biz setting. Two of the stand-our guests are David Bowie and Daniel Radcliff.

If you haven’t yet caught up with Extras, run don't walk to your local video outlet where you can find both seasons one and two, plus the totally excellent series finale.

Bad, bad bunnies.

30-Second Bunnies!
The next time you go to Crackle to catch Rescue Me webisodes, (you are catching them, right?), be sure to check out the 30 Second Bunnies. You can’t really understand the meaning of "that's just wrong" until you’ve seen the bunnies acting out Reservoir Dogs. I'm just saying.

Doctor Horrible's Day

Neil Patrick Harris as Doctor HorribleAct 1 of the Sing-a-long Blog is up on the site and it is typical Joss Whedon. I'll be watching again after dawn when I'm fully awake thanks to the demands of the household menagerie.

Crazy, But Clean

Craig Bierko! John Malkovich!I see a certain vein running through all my blog posts: Everyone I write about is either on the edge or has artistically rolled over the hill ages ago. But that is what makes these people so interesting, that certain 'spark,' divine or otherwise.

Craig Bierko is a case in point; he has done some excellent serious acting on TV with Boston Legal and Nip Tuck. On Broadway, he was nominated for several awards for Music Man, including being named to the Sexiest Actors on Broadway list by People magazine.

Craig has a long list of movies, including two at opposite ends of the spectrum: Cinderella Man, for which he received excellent reviews. In Scary Movie 4, he played 'Tom Ryan" and did better couch jumping than any other Tom ever did. Late night appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and the Late Show with Craig Ferguson have spotlighted his comedy chops.

Now Bierko is justifying his placement on Entertainment Weekly's 100 Most Creative People of 2003 with his bathing project at Super Deluxe.com. Any attempt to explain this or resist its attraction would be futile.
